The 2020 LeNez is bold, dense, and masculine, with black fruit, spice, and a finish that is lightly smoky to some, and earthy and dense to others.
LeNez means "the nose" in French, it's pronounced "Le Nay", and it's a playful pun on our winery name Lenné, which is itself a pun on "Lenny" the name of the man on our original label. Lenny was a man of generous appetites and a prodigious nose. He was the father of Karen, who was Lenné's co-founder along with her husband, Steve Lutz, who was our original winemaker.
The 2020 vintage was a a remarkable one. Cool and damp in the spring, a hot and very dry summer was baking a small fruit set into what was expected to be of the smallest but best vintages in the history of the Willamette Valley, Unfortunately, early September brought heavy smoke blowing hundreds of miles from fires in Northern California, and several days of orange skies imbued the fruit with a notable smokiness, a bit like sitting near a wood-fired pizza oven.
Reviews are mixed; some tasters can't get past the smoke; others taste it more as earthy than smoky, and love the dense, complex, rich mouthfeel of this vintage.
