Scarlet's opens with a truly exceptional bouquet of floral aromatics, along with hints of vanilla and brioche. The mouthfeel is exquisite, smoother and softer than our normal Chardonnay, with bright fruit notes of pear, green apple, and tropical fruits. The finish is supple and lingering.
All Lenné 2021 Chardonnay began the same, with frementation in a steel tank, followed by 9 months aging in French oak "puncheons," large 500 liter barrels that impart some oak, but not too much. At that point about 90% of our Chardonnay is fined, filtered, and bottled, to make our Estate Chardonnay. The 10-15% of remaining Chardonnay goes from oak into a small steel tank, along with 100% of the lees. That super "leesy" liquid is chilled, and kept just above freezing for an additional 10 months of aging, before bottling.
This unusual double aging tecnique is called "over-wintering" and it preserves the bright, citric, white-fruited flavors that make Oregon Chardonnay so unique, while the additional aging imparts an amazingly creamy, smooth, velvety texture. Supple in the mouth, but never buttery or cloying.
Lenné grows just one acre of Chardonnay on our 15.5 acre vineyard, and we produce around 150 cases a year of Chardonnay. 2021 was the last year we produced Scarlett's Reserve. This wine is named after "Scarlett O'Hair" the beloved terrier owned by Steve and Karen Lutz, Lenne's original owners.
